First gold bullion coin
The 1 Troy ounce Krugerrand (Kruger) is the oldest and best-known official investment coin containing exactly one Troy ounce of pure gold. The gold Krugerrand coin is issued in South Africa and has been minted by the Rand Refinery since 1967. The typical red hue of one troy ounce Krugerrand is caused by the addition of copper to the gold alloy, the total gold content is therefore 22 carats (91.97%). The addition of copper makes the coin harder and more resistant to damage.
Design
On the front of one troy ounce Krugerrand is the face of Paul Kruger displayed. This well-known leader was the fifth and last president of South Africa (Transvaal). The back of this classic gold bullion coin features the image of springbok antelope.
