The Sovereign is produced by the Royal Mint of England. The Sovereign is named after the 'English Gold Sovereign', which was last minted in 1604. In 1817 these coins were reissued and have a value of 1 British Pound.

Gold production and the Sovereign
From the 1st World War up until 1932, Sovereign coins were produced in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Bombay, Ottawa, and Pretoria. Between 1914 and 1957 the productions of the Sovereigns ceased, with the exception of a limited number of coins that were minted in 1925 in London as an attempt by Churchill to re-join the Gold Standard.
